Victorian Undead 2009 DC # 1 Ian Edginton Books
[What's pictured is actually Issue No. 1, which is what my review is about!]Wildstorm, home of zombies and other bloody monsters and mythology, came up with an issue that merges the Victorian detective's skills with the zombie world of science fiction and horror.
The cover is misleading, though it is cool to see a dead zombie Sherlock Holmes complete with maggots and bugs crawling all over him, he is very much alive in the actual story.
Part One of The Star of Ill Omen was written by Ian Edginton and art by Davide Fabbri. A meteor flashes the Victorian sky and spreads its poison into the water supply. People are dying left and right. Except they're not staying dead.
The zombies rise, bite and infect others and Holmes and Watson attempt to solve the mystery. They also run across an advanced android model which tries to kill them. Interesting, but I think the story would have been better without the additional robot stuff.
The book is full of axes, bloody axes and death which is fine, but doesn't really do much to push the story along. More like filler in a lot of the pages & panels. Wildstorm has lots of ads and splash pages for their upcoming books as well.
The story is worth a follow-up. What does the Secret Service want on this case and why are they discouraging Holmes from further investigation? What's going on?
The art is well-detailed, colorful and eye-catching. I just wish the story was more compelling.
